1. Establish the form: sculpt the trunk, plank, weapon or prop before adding surface noise.

2. Set the grain direction: use a tileable alpha at low intensity and keep the strokes aligned with the wood form.

3. Add structural depth: apply bark or tree VDM brushes to hero areas that need raised ridges, knots or broken silhouettes.

4. Finish selectively: add cracks, carved marks and worn edges where the object would naturally split or receive damage.
