Smart Materials for Substance Painter: Leather, Metal & Fabric Guide

A Smart Material bundles base color, roughness, metallic, normal, and height information into one mask-driven preset that reacts to the curvature and cavity of your mesh. Drop it on a leather jacket or a metal pauldron and it already knows where to place wear, grime, and edge highlights — no manual masking required.

VK GameDev has several Smart Material packs for Substance Painter, split by material and by size. The titles look similar at a glance, so this guide explains exactly what separates each one and which pack to grab first.

Quick pick: which pack do I need?

If you only read one section, read this one. Match your project to a row below.

Just need a few leather looks fast: Leather Smart Materials (10 materials, $3.99).
Want more leather variety for the same budget range: Leather Smart Materials Vol (11 materials, $3.99).
Working on a full leather-heavy project: Leather Smart Materials Substance Painter (50 materials, $4.99).
Texturing armor and want colorable base metal: Metal Armor Smart Materials (10 materials, $3.99).
Metal already looks clean but needs believable wear: Metal Smart Materials With Edge Wear (15 materials, $1.99).
Need painted, battle-damaged metal (vehicles, props): Damaged Painted Metal Smart Materials (21 materials, $1.99).
General clothing and props fabric: Fabric Smart Materials or Fabric Smart Materials Vol (10 materials each, $3.99).
Texturing t-shirts, dresses, or light summer clothing: Summer Fabric Smart Materials (11 materials, $2.99).
Want everything in one purchase: Smart Materials Bundle (77 materials across leather, metal, and fabric, $9.99).

Leather Smart Materials

All four leather packs use the same underlying leather grain and height data — the difference is how many finished material variations (color, sheen, wear level) each one includes. More materials means more distinct leather looks without hand-tweaking parameters yourself.

Curvature-aware leather grain, ready to drop onto jackets, straps, and armor padding.
Leather Smart Materials: 10 materials, $3.99 — the smallest, cheapest entry point.
Leather Smart Materials Vol: 11 materials, $3.99 — a second, distinct set of variations at the same price.
Leather Smart Materials For Substance Painter: 15 materials, $3.99 — the best per-material value of the small packs.
Leather Smart Materials Substance Painter: 50 materials, $4.99 — built for projects that need a full leather library in one purchase.

Metal Smart Materials

The metal packs are not interchangeable — each targets a different look, so pick by finish rather than by size.

Metal Armor Smart Materials preview
Clean, colorable armor-grade metal before wear and damage are layered on top.
Metal Armor Smart Materials: 10 materials, $3.99. Clean, colorable base-metal textures (base color, normal, metallic, height, roughness) built for painting armor before you add wear.
Metal Smart Materials With Edge Wear: 15 materials, $1.99. Wear is already baked into the mask logic, so raised edges and corners scuff automatically.
Damaged Painted Metal Smart Materials: 21 materials, $1.99. Painted metal in red, blue, and yellow with chipped-paint damage, aimed at vehicles, weapons, and painted props rather than raw armor.

A common workflow: start with Metal Armor for a clean colored base, then layer Edge Wear on top for general scuffing, and reach for Damaged Painted Metal specifically when the surface was painted and the paint itself needs to chip.

Fabric Smart Materials

Weave and fiber detail that reacts to curvature, ready for clothing and soft props.
Fabric Smart Materials: 10 materials, $3.99 — general-purpose weave and fiber looks for clothing and props.
Fabric Smart Materials Vol: 10 materials, $3.99 — a second, distinct set for more variety alongside the base pack.
Summer Fabric Smart Materials: 11 materials, $2.99 — lighter weaves tuned for t-shirts, dresses, and warm-weather clothing.

Or skip the decision entirely

The Smart Materials Bundle packs 77 materials from the leather, metal, and fabric lines into one $9.99 purchase — less than the price of three small packs bought separately. If you texture a mix of materials regularly, this is the better long-term buy.

How to use a Smart Material

Bake mesh maps first: Curvature and ambient occlusion bakes are what the Smart Material reads to place wear.
Drag onto a fill layer: Smart Materials apply as a single layer with generators already configured.
Adjust, don't rebuild: Tweak the built-in generator sliders (wear amount, dirt, grunge) instead of remasking from scratch.
Stack for damage: Add a second Smart Material above at reduced opacity for localized damage or paint chipping.
Bake your own version: Once tuned, save it as a new Smart Material so the settings carry over to your next asset.

FAQ

What's the actual difference between the leather packs with similar names?

Material count and price tier. All four share the same leather grain foundation; they differ in how many finished color/wear variations are included, from 10 up to 50.

Do I need Substance Painter to use these?

Yes. Smart Materials are Substance Painter's native *.spsm format and rely on Painter's curvature, cavity, and generator system.

Should I buy individual packs or the bundle?

If you only need one material type, buy that single pack. If you texture leather, metal, and fabric regularly, the 77-material bundle is cheaper per material.

Can Smart Materials replace hand-painted texturing entirely?

They cover the base look and wear placement fast, but hero assets usually still benefit from hand-painted touch-ups on top.
